When my mother was transitioning to soft foods, one of the best snack options we found was a simple mix of peanut butter, honey, and mashed banana. Not only is it easy to eat, but it’s also packed with protein, healthy fats, and natural sweetness—making it a nutritious and satisfying option for anyone with dysphagia.

A Historical Soft Food Staple
Peanut butter has long been recognized as one of the first pureed foods given to individuals with swallowing difficulties. It’s naturally smooth, nutrient-dense, and provides a rich source of protein. However, it can be thick and sticky, so proper preparation is key to making it safe and enjoyable.
How to Make This Easy Snack
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp smooth peanut butter (not chunky!)
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 tsp honey (optional, for sweetness and smoothness)
- 1–2 tbsp warm water or milk (for thinning, if needed)
Instructions:
- Mash the banana thoroughly in a bowl until it reaches a smooth consistency.
- Top with peanut butter
- Warm the peanut butter in a separate bowl for smooth or drizzle like consistency.
- or blend peanut butter and heavy whipping cream for a fluffy whipped peanut butter.
- Drizzle with honey
- Serve as-is or top with Creatine Whipped Cream for an extra boost of nutrition and flavor!
Why This Was a Favorite
- Soft and easy to eat—no chewing required.
- Familiar, comforting flavors that made my mother excited to eat.
- Customizable! You can adjust the thickness with milk, or even add a pinch of cinnamon for variety.
This snack became a staple in my mother’s recovery journey, and when topped with my Creatine Whipped Cream, it made for an extra delicious and protein-packed treat that supported her muscle strength.
